East Meets West: The Rise of the Chopine
This rare chopine dates from between the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Constructed out of a wooden platform covered with gold coloured velvet and embellished with silver lace, ruched ribbons and a tassel, it is an excellent example of a modestly high chopine of the period. Some of the more excessive chopines elevated wearers by as much as fifty-three centimetres.
