Italy has been renowned as the centre of fine shoemaking for centuries and the Museum holds many examples of exceptional Italian workmanship. Historically, Italy's position at the crossroads of East/West trade has allowed it to take exotic textiles and foreign concepts and transform them into luxury fashions such as the chopine. Today, only a small number of museums have examples of chopines.
