The Bata Shoe Museum sponsored a field trip to Alaska in 1989 and the research resulted in the acquisition of numerous artefacts as well as the major exhibition, Appeasing the Spirits: Alaskan Coastal Peoples. The exhibition was curated in conjunction with the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The attendant publication was published by University of Alaska Press.
