The Southern Plains
Comanche
The Comanche name comes from the Spanish camino ancho, which means "wide trail". They once lived further North towards the Rockies, but were displaced by Eastern Plains groups moving west away from encroaching European settlement. The Comanche economy was dependent upon horses and they controlled major trading routes throughout the Southwest. Through breeding, trading and stealing, a Chief might acquire as many as fifteen hundred horses.
