Baffinland Inuit

Combined Skins

I used this vertical design in caribou leg skin kamiks made for women. People in other communities have started making this design now.
Mary Battye, Pangnirtung, 1987

Women's caribou leg skin boots often have a strip of contrasting coloured seal skin sewn along each side of the decorative centre front panel. This striking design feature is known particularly as a Baffinland Inuit innovation, though other communities such as the Netsilik and Iglulik have incorporated it into the repertoire. Strong geometric shapes and patterns are the most common design elements seen on Baffinland kamiks.
