The Southern Plains
The southernmost reaches of the Great Plains stretched down into Texas and covered most of what are now Oklahoma and Kansas. Home to the Southern Cheyenne, Southern Arapaho, Comanche, Kiowa and Plains Apache, the southern Plains was the first section of the Great Plains to acquire horses from the Spanish. Southern footwear of the 19th century was typically made of asymmetrical rawhide-soles with deerskin uppers that were pigmented and embellished with beads, silver, tin and fringe.
