The Great Plains

Chokecherries

Chokecherries are closely related to the plum and are native to many areas across the Great Plains. Plains people mixed them with dried buffalo meat to create pemmican that could be stored for long periods of time. Pemmican was an important source of nutrition during the long winter months.

Sage

White sage grows wild on the Great Plains and is an important plant both medicinally and spiritually to Plains people. Sage is burned at smudging ceremonies and is made into various remedies for numerous illnesses.
