Keeping a Low Profile: Off With Their Heels
As the heel became more delicate in the late 18th century, shoemakers attempted to move it to the back of the foot. In order to compensate for weakness under the foot, wedge-like structures were sometimes employed to support the instep. This beautiful pair of embroidered black silk shoes with pink silk covered heels is a very good example of this. This style of slender heel is referred to as an "Italian" heel.
