Animals of the North
Level: 8 to 12 yearsGoals:
- To recognize Alaskan animals from an Eskimo sculpture
- To understand how Alaskan coastal peoples used each animal for their needs
Description:
Ask your students to identify Alaska and the Arctic on the classroom map (if you have not already done so). To set up the activity, ask students whether they know any animals that live in the Arctic: sea, land, or air. As a class discuss what needs and characteristics these animals have? Give them Worksheet 2: Animals. There are two steps to the worksheet. First, tell them that the Eskimo make sculptures out of ivory of the animals that live around them. Ask them to match each sculpture to a photo of the animal. Second, students should determine how Alaskan Coastal peoples have used each particular animal by drawing a line from the image of the actual animal to the paragraph describing how Alaskan Coastal people have used this animal for their needs.
