The Cold NorthLevel: 8 to 12 years
- To explore the climate of Alaska and other Arctic regions
Begin by asking students if they can find Alaska on the classroom map. Do they know what the weather is like in that region? What is the climate of the region? How is it different (if at all) from the region they live in? What would it be like to live in such a region if you had no technology (electricity, heat, snowmobiles, plastic). What would you have to do to survive? Proceed to Worksheet 1: Weather in the Arctic.
Ask students to write which kind of Arctic weather condition the pictures represent. The students can choose from these five conditions: ice floe, freezing rain, snow, hail, blizzard.
