The Disappearing Anasazi
Level: 12 to 13 yearsGoals:
- Introduce students to closely examining artifacts to glean information
- Demonstrate the ability to record information and key ideas from research
Description:
Using the information on the Anasazi in the web exhibition, introduce the students to the 'Ancient Ones'. Look at the yucca fibre footwear together, noting the decrease in weaving proficiency as the people became skilled at pottery-making. When there was no longer a need for water-tight woven vessels, the weaving skills deteriorated.
Together, look at the photograph of the Anasazi cliff dwellings. Discuss the mysterious disappearance of these architecturally sophisticated peoples around 1300 CE. Assign a research project for your students to find past and current theories explaining their disappearance.
