Stepping into Womanhood

Wrapped lines, quill and horsehair

Long before the coming of the Europeans, Athapaskans decorated their clothing with appliquéd lines of animal hair or porcupine quill. Dyed horsehair, imported by fur traders in the 19th and 20th centuries, was readily utilized in similar ways, usually for outlining moccasin uppers.
